Roadshow #5 – Interoperable Automated Driving with V2V Communication
The fifth installment of the Hi-Drive Roadshow, took place at the TRIWO Automotive Testing Center in Pferdsfeld on June 4-5, 2024, and showcases a key collaboration with our project partners Honda, Hyundai, and fev.io. This event demonstrates how V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle) communication enables seamless interoperability between automated driving systems across manufacturers.
During the event, we demonstrated the capabilities of V2V communication through three key motorway entry and merging scenarios. In these scenarios, a highway vehicle decelerates early to prioritize merging, while a ramp vehicle slows down to yield to ongoing traffic. At the same time, the highway vehicle preemptively changes lanes to facilitate the merge. By exchanging real-time V2X messages, vehicles can communicate and negotiate safe merging maneuvers, with both fully aware of each other’s intentions. This collaborative communication allows them to continue driving automated, even in complex situations.
Hi-Drive serves as a unique collaboration platform, bringing together multiple partners to test and refine interoperability. By providing a space for joint testing, Hi-Drive helps to expand the operational design domain (ODD), particularly in relation to the prototype Highway Chauffeur ADF.
This latest demonstration marks another significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to improve the safety and reliability of automated driving technologies, helping pave the way for a future where vehicles not only drive automated but also communicate and cooperate to create safer roads for all.
